CC Farmers Market Introduces mountain view sheep farm

Cameron County Farmers Market

Less than 3 weeks to our first market day of the season so it's time to start trumpeting about how amazing ALL our vendors are!! It takes a lot of skill, hard work and ingenuity to create the products you will find at the market and a lot of guts for the vendors to put themselves out there to showcase them to the community. Every year we give a big shout out to our vendors by highlighting them individually in our FB profiles. There would no market without these brave people so take a minute out of your day to get to know a little more about them....

First up this year is the popular Bonnie Troemel with mountain view sheep farm. Bonnie’s beautiful weaves have been impressing our market goers for the past 2 years and we are excited that she will be coming back again this year to share her talents with the community!

Bonnie’s woven shawls are highly unique in that she weaves them from the wool that she shears and spins herself from her own small herd of relatively rare Shetland sheep. Mainly found in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, this hardy breed, which are prized for their fine wool, were bought back from threatened status by small time farmers like Bonnie. Bonnie dyes the wool into vibrant colors and creates gorgeous, one-of-a-kind shawls from them. With their soft, luxurious feel and masterful weaving they would complete any outfit and are sure to garner many a compliment!

Her wooly companions not only provide Bonnie with wool however, she also milks them and this year she is adding an exciting new product to her stall: sheep's milk soaps!

Made from scratch by Bonnie herself these beautiful soaps come in a variety of imaginative scents including pumpkin spice, berry blossom, vanilla strawberry shortcake and maple cinnamon bun. For people with sensitive and allergy prone skin she also makes gentle fragrance-free soaps. The soaps come in many different fun designs from whimsical and floral to wildlife and farm animals. These adorable soaps will make great presents so be sure to stock up when you visit Bonnie at the markets this summer!

Bonnie will be at our first market of the season on Saturday, May 11th so stop by to see her and all our entrepreneurial vendors at the Emporium Town Square, 9am to 12pm!

CC Farmers Market Introduces Tom Spolski Maple!

Cameron County Farmers Market

Today we are very excited to introduce a new vendor to the market, Tom Spolski with Spolski Maple!

Tom has been making maple syrup for the last 13 years and has perfected the art, producing a delicious syrup right here in Cameron County. Even though he runs a big operation, tapping 460 soft maple trees in 3 different locations including Hunts Run, he is a one man show, doing all the work himself. He did introduce a tubing system several years ago which greatly cuts down on the sap collection part of the job but it is still a very impressive feat to manage all this by himself. But, as he says himself, he has his system all worked out and any help would just get in the way of him doing his job efficiently, lol!

After he collects the sap from the trees Tom runs it through a Reverse Osmosis machine that takes out 60-80% of the water. This greatly reduces the time needed in the next step, which is heating the sap until the majority of the water has evaporated off and he is left with the thick syrup he is striving for. He runs this through a filter press to take out any sand and debris after which he is ready to bottle it. The end product is a deliciously sweet syrup, at just the right consistency for serving on pancakes, in drinks, in baking or there are a multitude of other ways to consume it!

As well as regular maple syrup, Tom also makes cinnamon maple syrup, a scrumptious twist on the original flavor. My personal favorite has to be his maple mustard though, great for spreading on sandwiches or adding to a home-made salad dressing. It has a unique taste that will complement many dishes to give it that extra special flavor!

You will find Tom at our first market of the season on Saturday, May 11th, at the Emporium Town Square, 9am to 12pm so be sure to stop by to say hello to our newest vendor and pick up some local sweetness for yourself!

Michael “Mike” John Brennan,

Michael “Mike” John Brennan, 84, formerly of New Bloomfield, passed away peacefully at The Woods at Cedar Run in Camp Hill on April 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 1, 1939, in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania, Mike was the son to the late Bernard and Rose (Bauer) Brennan.

Mike was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in New Bloomfield.

A Cameron County High School graduate, Mike earned his bachelor’s degree from Lock Haven University and served as an award-winning Park Superintendent at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport for 35 years. While at Little Buffalo, he and his staff restored Shoaff’s Mill to working condition. It continues to operate as a museum, grinding and cracking corn and grinding apples for cider. Clay’s Covered Bridge was relocated during Mike’s tenure as Holman Lake was created.

As an avid outdoorsman and nature enthusiast, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and birdwatching. Mike was a certified master gardener dedicated to propagating Pennsylvania native species. He served on many Perry County Boards, including tourism and those concerning history, as well as the first board of the Perry Health Center in Loysville.

Most of all, Mike was a devoted family man, always supporting his children and grandchildren. Mike was well known for loving life and cherishing every moment here on earth with his family.

Mike is survived by his three daughters, Leslie Heimbaugh (husband Timothy) of Newport, Molly Moore (husband William) of New Cumberland, Karen Clay of Mechanicsburg; his son Bernard Brennan of Mechanicsburg; three sisters, Frances Guisto of Emporium, PA, Margaret Summerson (husband Steve) of Emporium, and Teresa Petrazzio (husband Mark) of Moneta, VA; 10 grandchildren, Kelsey Heimbaugh, Michael Heimbaugh, Jake Heimbaugh, Maggie Heimbaugh, Samuel Brennan; Ian Clay (wife Kelsey), Benjamin Clay, Mackenzie Brennan-Smith (husband Trevor), Hannah Brennan, and Kaelin Brennan; and one great-granddaughter, Kiera Brennan-Smith.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death on December 13, 2023, by his devoted wife of 60 years, Kathleen Brennan, and many years earlier by his sister, Patricia Benedict.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Michael and Kathleen Brennan on Saturday, May 18, at 11:00 am at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 811 Shermans Valley Rd, New Bloomfield. A Celebration of Life for Mike and Kathleen will be held on Saturday, May 25, at 2:00 pm at Little Buffalo Campground Recreation Center, 483 Black Hill Rd, Newport. Interment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, at the convenience of the family.

In place of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd, Harrisburg, PA 17110, or to the Perry County Literacy Council, P.O. Box 37, Newport, PA 17074.

Cameron County Community Chest 2024 Fund Drive April Update

Cameron County Community Chest 2024 Fund Drive April Update

As of April 20th, we have collected $16,281 toward our $16,600 fund drive goal.
Thanks to all who have contributed. It is really appreciated in these uncertain times. We will keep the 2024 Fund Drive open until September 30, 2024. We are hoping to raise extra funds to go toward the special event activities in our community.

This month’s featured organization will be the Friends of the Library.
The Friends of the Library is an organization that helps to maintain the many aspects of The Barbara Moscato Brown Public Library. There are so many activities that can be found at the library. Events such as; the Author Talk Series, Master Gardener Classes, Stuffy Sleepover, Wizarding Days, and a Date With a Book just to name a few. Funding helps support such events. Funds are generated mainly through a yearly Membership Drive and the “Donate and Wish Friends and Family Happy Holidays”. Throughout the year, book related auctions and baskets sales also add to the funding.

The local library has so much more to offer. There are computer stations, copying, faxing and laminating available as well. Having a current library card allows access to LIBBY which streams e-books and magazines. A card also allows access to UDEMY classes which have a great range of offerings. And a card opens up options to access KANOPY which is a streaming service for movies, documentaries, some TV series, and children’s shows.

Funding also helps with the purchase of furnishings, and building maintenance both interior and exterior. It helps and supports ongoing programs including Story Hour, Summer Reading, Lego Club, as well as supporting the Emporium Garden Club whose members decorate the interior of the library throughout the year along with exterior planting updates.

Items purchased include three sets of display shelves; exterior trash bin; book cart; wall chair storage; rolling chair storage; plus underwriting the cost of having the multipurpose room and hall painted; and covering overrun costs of grant projects.

The Membership Drive is currently in place and running. Membership forms can be obtained at the library or by going on the library website @ barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org.

Please continue to support your public library. No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager, or go to our Face Book page where there is a PayPal button. Help support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team, the Garden Club, and special community requests.
